Familiar Stranger
When the Spirit Moves the Body to Generosity
We’re diving back into Acts 2:42-47 to see what happens when the Holy Spirit fills ordinary believers. The same Spirit who moved tongues of fire also moved hearts to generosity - turning strangers into family and transforming possessions into provision for those in need. What does that mean for us today? We’ll discover how God’s Spirit frees us from chasing after the empty promises of the world so that we can experience the extraordinary life that Jesus wants to offer. Invite a friend, bring the family, and expect to be encouraged by stories of how the Spirit is already moving through Faith Oakville!
Acts 2:42-47
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
For Adult Homes and Groups
1. When have you been the recipient of an unexpected act of generosity that deeply impacted you? What did it teach you about God’s character?
2. In what ways do comfort, comparison, or fear keep you from open-handed living? How do we sometimes expect God to bless our version of the “American dream” instead of trusting His plan for provision?
3. Read 2 Corinthians 8:9. How does Jesus’ self-giving love reshape your view of generosity? What does it mean that the Spirit empowers you to give because Christ first gave Himself for you?
4. What’s one tangible way you can practice Spirit-empowered generosity this week?
For Families with Kids
1. Read Acts 2:42-47 as a family. This passage describes what the early church was like. What were some of the things the early believers in Jesus did together? How did they show their unity?
2. How did these believers share with each other? What does it look like when we share our “stuff” and “time” with church family?
3. What did the people who weren’t believers in Jesus think when they saw how these early believers acted together?
4. Make it a goal to reach out to three different people from Faith that you know this month and ask how you can help them, pray for them, and/or encourage them, and then follow through and do it. Pray for the Holy Spirit to help you.
Series Information

For a generation searching desperately for an experiential spirituality, there's good news: the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence to empower and transform is freely available. Unfortunately, confusion and unfamiliarity surround the Person of the Holy Spirit, leading many Christians to either sideline him or misunderstand what he means for their spiritual lives. In the Familiar Stranger series, we will reintroduce this oft-neglected Person of the Trinity, tracing the story of the Holy Spirit as it unfolds throughout the Bible, and inviting believers to close the gap between what Scripture reveals about the Holy Spirit and their lived experience.
