Unexpected Christmas
Unexpected Visit
Join us today as we look at the story of the Magi and ask a simple but challenging question: What are we following? The wise men came seeking guidance, power, and meaning, but along the way, God drew them to something far greater than they expected. As we stand at the threshold of a new year, we’ll reflect on where we look for direction when life feels uncertain and how encountering Jesus reshapes what we trust and who we follow. Whether you’re confident in your faith or still sorting things out, this is a message for anyone longing for clarity, peace, and a better way forward.
Matthew 2:2-12
2 “Where is He who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found Him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
For Adult Homes and Groups
1. Read Matthew 2:2-12. When you’re facing an uncertain decision or season in life, where do you naturally look first for guidance? Maybe it’s people, solid plans, good information, gut instinct, prayer, or something else? Why do you think that is?
2. The Magi followed signs that promised insight and control before they encountered Jesus. In what ways do you find yourself relying on things other than God for security, clarity, or a sense of control, especially when life feels overwhelming?
3. In Matthew’s story, God meets the Magi where they are and then reveals Jesus to them. How does it change the way you think about God to know that He seeks us first and gives us faith, rather than waiting for us to have everything figured out?
4. As you head into this new year, what is one “star” you may need to stop following? What would it look like, practically, to take one step of trust or obedience toward Jesus instead?
For Families with Kids
1. Read Matthew 2:2-12 together.
2. An unusual star guided the Magi. It was unlike anything they had seen before. How has Jesus used an unexpected event or person to guide you or your family closer to Jesus?
3. Why was Herod afraid of a baby? Sometimes God’s plans disrupt our own plans. When things don’t go your way, do you react more like Herod (anger/fear) or the Magi (wonder/trust)?
4. The Magi brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh - valuable but unusual gifts for a child. What is one “unexpected” gift - your time, a talent, or a kind word - you can give to someone in Jesus’ name this week?
