The Gospels - Luke John
The Sending and Returning of the 72 Disciples
In Luke 10, Jesus gives His disciples the authority to heal and cast out demons. Then they come back and are rejoicing at what they were able to do with this new power. So what’s wrong with this picture? Let’s talk about it.
DISCIPLESHIP CONVERSATIONS
For Adult Homes or Groups
1. Read Luke 10:1-12, 17-20.
2. Have you ever traveled for work or school? If so, share about the trip… with whom you traveled, how long you were gone, what you accomplished, did you have the right people on the trip?
3. When you returned to work, what did you need to do related to the trip? Also discuss what it was like returning home from the trip.
4. For the 72 disciples, what would have been the best and worst parts of their travels? What about returning home?
5. If you have been on a mission trip, how did your trip compare to what you described in #3 above? What have been some recent highs or lows in your missional “travels” to where you live, work, learn, and play?
6. What are some things we can do for each other to make our “return home” each day/week more joyful? How can we keep our focus on rejoicing that our “names are written in heaven?”
Families with Kids
1. Read Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 with your family. If you have younger children, you can just read verses 1-2 and verses 8-11.
2. Have everyone share about a time when their parents asked them to do a chore. Share whether the chore was done alone or with the help of a sibling or other family member.
3. Say, “Just like the people did in our Bible passage today, we can help people and tell them about Jesus and how much He loves them. And we never have to do it alone because we have family to help us and we have God’s Spirit in our hearts.”
4. Bonus activity: Identify and pray with your child for one person your child would like to tell about Jesus, and then create an opportunity for your child to tell the person in his/her own words what you discussed above.
Series Information
Has anyone been wondering, “What is God up to these days?” The volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and confusion seem to be only growing all around us. Could God be trying to tell us something? Is there a message that could potentially give us some understanding, clarity, and hope?
