Living in Light of the End

Have you ever seen a movie that really scared you? What might change if you watched that same movie again? You would probably be a little less scared because you knew what was coming. This week, we will discover that God has revealed the ending to us and how that can help us live with less fear.

Revelation 21:1-8
21 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

For Adult Homes or Groups

1. Read Revelation 21:1-8.

2. What are two things you are most afraid of and why?

3. How have you let your fears stand in the way of following God?

4. Jesus followed God’s will for Him even though it meant going to the cross. Three days later He rose from the dead and showed us how God caused life to come even from death. How does Jesus’ example inspire you to be faithful in your own journey?

5. What is one fear you need to face this week in order to follow where God is calling you to go? Share how you plan to face that fear with your group.

For Families with Kids

1. Read Revelation 1:3-4 with your family.

2. Have everyone share something they are afraid of. Why are you afraid of that thing?

3. Revelation 1:4 says that one day, God will wipe away all of the things that are sad, scary, and painful. Does that change how you feel about the things you are afraid of? Why?

4. Pray with your family. Confess all of your fears to God, and thank Him for giving us the strength in the Holy Spirit to face those fears and the knowledge that one day, He will make all things new!

Series Information

We have reached the book of Revelation in our daily Bible reading! Let’s just admit it - Revelation is a very strange book. It’s full of angels and demons, lions and lambs, horses and dragons, ghouls, ghosts, and beasts. It’s a letter that reads more like a live drama that Jesus puts on for John during his time of worship.
