Fear, Love, & Trust - 10 Commandments
God’s Beckoning Call
When we're given a list of to-dos, our initial response is unlikely to be jumping in with enthusiasm. We're more likely to be apathetic and hoping to avoid the tasks. The key to making any successful demand is invitation. That's what God does for us. God first invites us to a life with Him - a life not just about fear and trust, but even greater: a life of love.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
For Adult Homes and Groups
1. Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9. What does it mean to love God with all our heart, soul, and might? What does that look like outside of worship?
2. How can this love turn into devotion, obedience, and action instead of merely an emotion?
3. Reread vv7-9. As a group, think of some practical steps you can take to ensure God’s commands are implanted in your hearts, not just your memory. Make it a goal to encourage one another daily during this message series.
4. How does the Good News of Jesus empower us to truly love God with all our heart, soul, and might? How does God’s grace help us strive for greater obedience - to see it as a delight?
5. Pick a worship song to listen to that praises God for who He is and what He has done for us.
For Families with Kids
1. Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9. What does it mean to say that “the Lord is one”?
2. How does loving God with our heart, soul, and might differ from a partial love for Him? If it helps, make two columns and list the differences.
3. How did Jesus love God with His heart, soul, and might?
4. Reread vv8-9. How can we make God’s Word visible in our homes and make it a reminder that God is with us and helps us?
5. What are challenges you face as a family that make it hard to live out God’s commands? Write them down. Pray together, name each of those challenges, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you overcome them together.
