The Character of God

Faithful in Every Way

Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week… the beginning of the end for Jesus and what He came down to do: suffer and die on the cross for our sins. On this day we see Him do some pretty cool things that point back to God's promises of old and His promises that will be coming. Jesus is the full display of God's faithfulness in every way.

Luke 19:28-40

28 And when He had said these things, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as He rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As He was drawing near - already on the way down the Mount of Olives - the whole multitude of His disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

For Adult Homes and Groups

1. Read Luke 19:28-40 out loud. What’s familiar about this story to you? Was there anything new you noticed this time? Take time to share.

2. Jesus purposefully chooses a path leading to His death, not a political crown. How does this demonstrate God’s faithfulness to provide the ultimate sacrifice, even when it looks different from what we expect or desire?

3. While Pharisees demand silence, Jesus says that if the people are silent, the stones will cry out. How does this assure you that God will be glorified and His truth revealed regardless of opposition or human faithlessness?

4. Read Luke 19:30-31 again. Note how Jesus knows specific details about a situation before He arrives. Spend time praying about a situation in your life where you feel unsure, trusting that God is already ahead of you and that His purposes will be met.

For Families with Kids

1. Read Luke 19:28-40 together. What do you like about this story?

2. What did Jesus tell the disciples to go find? (v. 30) What were the disciples supposed to say if someone asked why they were taking the

colt? (v. 31)

3. How does this story show that Jesus is God?

4. Jesus is faithful even in small details. Just as He knew about the donkey, He knows all the details of our lives. What is one specific worry you have that you can trust God with?

5. Go outside and find some rocks. Using paint or markers, write on each rock one specific way you have experienced God’s faithfulness (for example, “good,” “patient,” “slow to anger,” or “steadfast”).

Series Information

We all carry questions about who God really is - especially when life feels unpredictable or painful. In Exodus 34:6–7, God reveals the core of His character in words that echo throughout the entire Bible. The Character of God series invites us to slow down and listen to what God says about Himself. During Lent, we will unpack these defining traits of God one by one, discovering a God who is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and overflowing with faithful love.
