Celebration Sunday - Resilient Love
Ever feel like giving up on God? Disappointment, loss, and doubting God’s goodness can easily be forces the devil uses to damage - if not destroy - our faith. The Apostle Paul shares a prayer for believers (that’s you and me) that promises “power through His Spirit in your inner being in order for us to be rooted in and grounded in love.” What is this power and how can we experience it?
Ephesians 3:14-19
14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
For Adult Homes and Groups
1. Read Ephesians 3:14-19 in some different translations. What observations can you make about the Father’s description, the Holy Spirit’s, and Jesus’?
2. It was mentioned that this was a passionate prayer by the Apostle Paul (“I bow my knees”). Why would Paul feel so passionate about God’s people “experiencing” the full measure of Jesus’ love for them?
3. Can you describe an instance when you have experienced Christ’s love in an extraordinary, even supernatural way?
4. Which area do you struggle most with to experience Jesus’ love for you: prayerful seeking, aggressive wrestling with the text, being with other believers, or centering your life in Christ?
5. Where does the ultimate proof of God’s love for you dwell? (See Romans 5:8.)
For Families with Kids
1. Read Ephesians 3:18-19 NIRV: May you have power together with all the Lord’s holy people to understand Christ’s love. May you know how wide and long and high and deep it is. And may you know His love, even though it can’t be known completely.
2. What is the biggest thing you have ever carried? What is the biggest thing you have ever seen someone else carry?
3. What is one of the tallest things you have ever seen? Longest or largest? Can you imagine you or someone else trying to carry those things? Depending on what you said, it is probably unimaginable. It doesn’t seem possible that someone could carry a large building or ship.
4. But that’s how Jesus’ love for you is described; Jesus’ love for you is so big that we can’t even understand how He does it. How does it make you feel knowing that you are loved that much?
5. Pray a prayer thanking Jesus for loving you that much.
