Miracles Matter

Calming the Storm

Pastor Matt Peeples has made a career out of asking the question “why" before “what". When it comes to mission and ministry, that strategy has served him well. However, when it comes to the storms in his life, he found that the question "why" gets in the way. Amid the storms, it's easy to go down the "why" rabbit trail trying to find answers to questions without good answers. As we look at the miracle of Jesus calming the storm, Pastor Matt draws us into a different understanding of it. Ultimately, it calls us to ask a different question in the storm. Let's dig into the miracle of Jesus calming the storm and learn how we, as followers of Jesus, can approach any storm in our lives.

For Adult Homes & Groups

1. Are you in the midst of a storm, or have you walked through a storm recently in your life?

2. When you are in the midst of the storm, what questions do you find yourself asking God?

3. In the midst of the storm we need to focus on the promises of God. Read Romans 8:28-39. What promises do you hear that you can hold onto?

4. The disciples were in the safest place they could be because Jesus was in the boat. Read John 16:33. What promise do you hear Jesus making to you in the midst of the storm?

For Families with Kids

1. Read Mark 4:35-41 together.

2. What do you think the disciples were most afraid about?

3. How did Jesus stop the storm? How did He calm the disciples in the middle of the storm?

4. Why do you think people were scared? Is it wrong to be scared? Why or why not? What happens when we give our fears to Jesus? Are there any fears too big or too small for Jesus?

5. Being afraid is part of life; we’re going to have moments when we’re scared. But Jesus has power over all things...even the things we fear! Pray together and say what worries you out loud; ask Jesus to speak His Word of peace in your heart.

6. As a family, read and memorize John 16:33: Jesus is above all things and with us in all things!
