Philippians - Finding Joy
Bright Stars in a Dark Sky
Are you different? When you find yourself in a crowd, at a gathering, among friends, family, coworkers, or even on vacation, do you stick out as someone whose Spirit-fueled love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control are evident? In our text for today, the Apostle Paul’s encouragement is to be without grumbling, arguing…without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation… as you shine like stars in the universe. (Philippians 2:15). That’s a hefty challenge! We should ask how this is even possible in the day we live. With the Spirit’s help, may we discover Christ’s example and enablement as we learn what it means to “shine like stars” for Jesus.
Philippians 2:12-17
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
For Adult Homes and Groups
1. Where were you when you saw the most spectacular display of the stars in the dark sky? Describe the emotions or thoughts you had at the time.
2. Read Philippians 2:12-18. How do you understand what it means to “work out your salvation with fear and trembling”? See also v. 13.
3. What words jump off the page as you read vv. 14-15? Where do you see God in these verses? What do they say about people? About the world we live in? Share examples from the news or experiences you have had about the world you live in, your struggles with grumbling, etc.
4. Paul writes, “I am being poured out as a drink offering...” He’s struggling, suffering, and pouring himself out for the cause of Christ and for the people he is ministering to. What sacrifices will be made to “shine as lights in the world” we live in today as “children of God”? (v. 15)
5. How does the cross of Christ, Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection, provide the example and the enablement (and empowerment) for Christians to “shine like stars” in the dark world we live in?
For Families with Kids
1. Read Philippians 2:12-30 together.
2. Paul encourages us to work out our salvation. None of us can work for our salvation, but what role do we have in growing our faith?
3. God calls us to do everything without complaining or arguing (vv14-18). What is something you’ve been complaining about lately? How can God help you move from complaining to complimenting?
4. These verses in Philippians focus on joyful and selfless service and working out our faith. Help make this a goal every day this week by offering to help someone before they ask, asking God to help you do it with eagerness, and praying for Jesus to shine His light through you.
