Bear One Another’s Burdens

I hate to admit it, but I have used the following phrase. I now know that this is not the most helpful phrase to use with people, but nonetheless, I have said it. What’s the phrase? "God never gives you more than you can handle.” Theology aside, this phrase is not great because it can feel like we are being dismissive of the depth of a person’s problem. But theologically, there might be a small kernel of truth here, which prompts the following question: Is there a burden that is too heavy for us to bear? My answer: Yes. And. No. Let’s talk about it.

Galatians 6:1-10

6 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5 For each will have to bear his own load.

6 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

DISCIPLESHIP CONVERSATIONS

For Adult Homes or Groups

1. Read Galatians 6:1-10.
2. What is something heavy that you have had to move? How did you move it? Did you move it by yourself? If you needed someone’s help, did you try to move it by yourself at first?
3. Sometimes we feel like we have the “weight of the world” on our shoulders. What is a “weight of the world” you are feeling this week?
4. In what ways is Jesus taking the burden of sin and death from us similar to us helping people with their burdens in this life? In what ways is it different?
5. The burden that we get to carry is living a faithful life of loving God and loving our neighbor. What burden do you feel God asking you to bear on behalf of a neighbor this week?
6. Pray for the burdens of those in your group and those of your neighbors who God is calling you to help.

For Families with Kids

1. Read Galatians 6:2-5. If you have young children, you can simply read Galatians 6:2.
2. Have everyone share about something heavy they have lifted. Did they lift the object by themselves or did they need help?
3. Sometimes, carrying one another’s “heavy loads” is not about a big heavy object. It’s about helping each other. Since today is Mother’s Day, have everyone share something that their mom or other family member has done to help them.
4. Bonus Activity: This week, thank someone who has helped you or mentored you.

Series Information

The 13 books of the Bible from Romans to Philemon are written by a first-century Christian missionary named Paul. These “books” are actually first-century letters and are often called “The Pauline Epistles.”
