A Renewal of Worship

Throughout the Bible, when God revealed Himself, God’s people often responded with repentance - a next step, a new step, a change in direction. This is part of the renewal, revival, a reformation process we see among God’s people when the Holy Spirit is made manifest. Last week we discovered that renewal is almost always accompanied by times of renewed prayer - a crying out to God in desperation. God’s people would also return in humility to worship and bow down - a renewal of worship. What would a renewal of worship look like for you? For Faith?

Isaiah 6:1-8

Isaiah's Vision of the Lord

6 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above Him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!” 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah's Commission from the Lord

8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”

For Adult Homes & Groups

1. Icebreaker: What’s the most valuable item you own (barring your house or retirement savings)? How does that item have the potential to be something you or others worship?

2. Martin Luther reminds us of the third commandment: Remember the sabbath to keep it holy. This means we should fear and love God so we do not despise preaching His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it. What could be behind the decline of weekly worship in the U.S.? Why do two-thirds of Christians believe it’s okay to worship alone or with family and not be part of a church body?

3. Read Isaiah 6:1-4. What did Isaiah see? What is a Seraphim? What could be implied with the majestic use of Holy, holy, holy? (v. 8 - who will go for “us”)

4. What did Isaiah sense? Read v. 5. (See also Genesis 18:27; Job 42:5-6; Judges 13:22; Hebrews 3:16; John 18:6.) Have you personally experienced this?

5. What did Isaiah receive during this vision of God? Read vv. 6-7. How do we communicate to each other God’s forgiveness and grace (absolution) earned because of the death and payment for our sins through the King of kings?

6. What was Isaiah moved to do? Read vv. 8-9a. Is there something specific you are led to do in response to God’s love and mercy this week? Close in prayer by asking the Lord to bless your missional endeavors as a group.

For Families with Kids

1. Read Psalm 100 together.

2. Worshipping Jesus gives Him value in our lives. What are things you love about Jesus? What do you tell others about Him?

3. God calls us to worship Him both when we’re alone and with other believers. This includes reading God’s Word, praying and singing together, and preaching. Those aren’t the only ways, but they are the best ways. Why are these the best? What are some other ways we can worship Jesus?

4. Pick two or three favorite Christian worship songs and sing them together as a family in the car or at home.

Series Information

What would the Church of Jesus Christ at Faith Oakville look like if the Holy Spirit truly renewed and revived us? What would taking the 'Next Step' look like? During this six-week series, we will attempt to paint a biblical picture of a church that is taking the 'Next Step' to trust in God above all things.
