True Treasure

True spiritual treasure is rarely found on the surface. Diving into Matthew 13, God's Kingdom isn’t meant to be a supplement to our routines; it completely transforms our entire existence. Jesus invites us to look past life's competing distractions, rediscover the "pearl of great price", and find the lasting joy that only comes from trusting Him above all else.

Matthew 13:44-52

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

New and Old Treasures

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

For Adult Homes and Groups

1. Read Matthew 13:44-52 together.

2. Jesus is not a “supplement” or a “life coach” to add to an already smooth

life; He is our Savior who demands complete transformation. Honestly evaluate your current relationship with Him: Are you treating Him as a helpful add-on, or are you allowing His Kingdom to remake and rule over every area of your life?

3. Both men in the parables sacrificed everything they had to obtain the treasure, driven by joy rather than guilt or obligation. When you think about your spiritual disciplines, obedience, and service to God, are you driven to “try harder” out of duty, or “trust deeper” because of who Jesus is?

4. What competing “pearls” (success, relationships, financial security, or comfort) are currently vying for the top spot in your heart, and how can you refocus your allegiance onto Jesus this week?

For Families with Kids

1. Read Matthew 13:44-52 together as a family.

2. Read v44 again together. Why do you think Jesus says His love and His Kingdom are like a hidden treasure? How can we “look beneath the surface” to find joy in Jesus even on normal, boring days?

3. The men in Jesus’ stories gladly sold everything they owned because they found something way better. Following Jesus sometimes means giving up things like selfishness, bad attitudes, or our own way. Why does finding Jesus make those sacrifices feel easy and full of joy?

4. What are some good things in our lives (like sports, screens, or hobbies) that try to take up all of our time and attention? How can we work together as a family to keep Jesus as our number one prize? Write or plan a goal list for the next month to make Jesus the priority?
